"You don't understand! You are nothing to me. You are not my mother. You gave up the right to call me your son long ago. I can never forgive or accept you."
—Julian to Phoebe.

Julian Turner is the son of Cole Turner and Phoebe Halliwell, conceived when Cole was possessed by the essence of the Source of All Evil. He is the first hybrid between a demon and a witch in existence, born in 2003.

Originally believed to be vanquished after he was stolen by the Seer, it was eventually revealed that he survived due to being saved by Elizabeth Turner, who gave birth to him and raised him to become a new vessel for the Source. However, after the truth about his identity was revealed, his mother managed to expel the essence and set him free.

History[]

Pre-Birth[]

Julian's birth was foreseen by the Seer during her service to Cole Turner after he had been possessed by the essence of the Source. To ensure the child would be evil, the Seer had Cole marry Phoebe in a dark wedding instead of a white one. The Seer then performed a fertility ritual to ensure Phoebe would become pregnant if she ate the chocolates with a potion.

Shortly after Phoebe discovered she was pregnant, she joined Cole as his Queen of the Underworld. During this time, the Seer fed her tonics that were supposed to be good for the child, though in reality were designed to destroy its soul. When Phoebe discovered the tonics were poisonous, she stopped drinking them. She later rejoined her sisters and vanquished Cole as she realized she could not be evil and remain at his side.

After Cole had been vanquished, the unborn child became increasingly violent and hateful. He was then stolen from Phoebe's womb by the Seer, who proclaimed the child had always been hers because she planned his conception. However, upon becoming the new Source, the Seer was overwhelmed by the power of the child and was vanquished as a result. It was long believed that the child had died as well, though he was actually transferred into the womb of Elizabeth Turner.

Childhood[]

Julian was born to Elizabeth and raised in a manor just outside of San Francisco. He was born the night before his cousin Wyatt Halliwell. Elizabeth was a particularly cruel and abusive parent and spent his childhood preparing him to become the new vessel for the Source of All Evil. However, Julian would occasionally sneak out and visit the beach, which would form his only happy memories. At the age of thirteen, Julian was forced to perform a magical ritual to take in the essence of the Source, thus becoming possessed.

As the Source[]

"I could see everything, hear everything. The essence and I were one, yet I was trapped in a prison. I felt what he felt, believed that what he wanted, I wanted as well."
—Julian about his experience as the Source.

The Source spent the following years gaining power and growing used to his new vessel, while Julian was trapped inside his own body. While their personalities essentially merged as one, a small part of Julian remained unaffected and resisted his possession. Additionally, the Source would sometimes shut him out completely, so he could not see or hear a thing. The Source planned to return and reclaim leadership of the Underworld, though he realized he was not strong enough.

His first encounter with the Halliwells was when he tried to steal the Book of Shadows to gain more power. However, he was later confronted by them and forced to retreat as the time was not right. The Source later worked with Barbas and gave him a portion of his powers, only to be betrayed in the end. Barbas than confirmed that he knew the true identity of his new body.

Being Freed[]

Despite losing some power to Barbas, the Source proceeded with his plans to reclaim the Underworld and planned a coronation. This would also destroy what was left of Julian, who became increasingly more resistant. When Phoebe had a disturbing dream and premonition, she started to suspect that the Source was her son. She then used a spell to teleport herself to him and he confirmed her suspicions.

Through his memories, the Source revealed the truth to Phoebe and planned to use her as a sacrifice for his coronation. Meanwhile, the Seer, whom the Source had been trying to kill for failing him, provided information to Chris Halliwell so his family could vanquish the Source before his coronation.

Just before the coronation could begin, the Halliwells summoned Phoebe and the Source from the Underworld and attempted to vanquish him. However, Phoebe interrupted them and performed a spell to expel the essence from her son instead, which succeeded. Julian then took Phoebe to the beach, where he informed her she was nothing to him and that he wanted nothing to do with her family.

Looking for Answers[]

Following his release from the essence, Julian went looking to find out who he was and what he was meant to do. He went to his childhood home, where he was confronted by Elizabeth. She attempted to persuade him to return to evil and accept her as his mother. However, due to her cruel nature and their history, he wanted nothing to do with her. Elizabeth then attacked Julian and knocked him out.

Elizabeth kept Julian prisoner, while she cast a spell to let the essence of the Source possess all mortals in the city to attack the Halliwells. However, after several failed attempt to convert him, Elizabeth decided to summon a Wraith to forcefully extract his soul. However, she was interrupted by the arrival of the Halliwells, allowing the Wraith to escape.

Julian then turned on Elizabeth and attacked her. He then agreed to reverse the spell to free the mortals, but insisted nothing had changed between him and the Halliwells. Elizabeth then escaped with the essence and the Grimoire and Julian told his family members to leave.

Escape from Wraith[]

In the following days, the Wraith kept targeting Julian to the point where he was exhausted. He discovered that fire could chase it off, but he could not vanquish it. Desperate, he eventually had no choice but to reach out to Phoebe, though he collapsed before he could explain anything. Phoebe asked her husband to take him to their hotel, which he did after some hesitation. Once Julian woke up, Coop tried to reason with him about his mother and admitted that he personally struggled with everything as well. Julian then told him about the Wraith and tried to leave, though he fainted again.

After recovering his strength, Julian tried to leave, though Phoebe, Prue and Penny arrived before he could. After a heated argument, Phoebe used her empathy to calm her children, but the effort made her collapse and Julian and Prue left anyway. Phoebe managed to convince Penny to go and look for her half-brother. She found him and the two began to bond a little after Julian had saved her from the Wraith.

Back at the hotel, they were joined by Phoebe and Prue, whom had been convinced by Noah, and decided to face Elizabeth. They confronted her in her loft in New York and after a brief confrontation between his mother and his grandmother, Julian vanquished Elizabeth with a fireball. He then used a spell from the Grimoire to vanquish the Wraith. A Raptor Demon then stole the urn containing the essence of the Source.

When the four returned to Miami, Julian decided to leave, as he was not ready to be part of a family. Phoebe did not object and told him she would wait, as she would not force him like Elizabeth had tried.

Working with the Seer[]

To prove he could be on the side of good, Julian attacked a demonic gang led by Merrick, eliminating a part of it. He was then joined by the Seer who suggested working together after telling him about Dahlia and her vast collection of souls. She desired the souls, while it would give Julian the opportunity to connect with his family, as Dahlia had taken over P3 and invited his cousins to the opening. Although Julian felt conflicted about offering up the souls, he agreed to help his family.

Julian teleported to the manor to warn them, but Chris attacked him, which angered Penny. Julian talked to Payton and warned the cousins about the trap. He then wanted to leave, but Payton convinced him to stay. They found Dahlia in the Book of Shadows and learned that the only way to defeat her was to force her to make a deal that would destroy her. Penny tried to leave in secret, though Julian caught her. She tried to use her new power of hypnosis on him, though it failed as Julian was immune to it. After they were attacked by Dahlia's minions and defeated them, Penny convinced Julian to accompany her to the club.

Julian was recognized by Merrick, who followed him into the bathroom. The two engaged in a fight and Merrick summoned four of his demons. However, Julian was able to defeat them by electrocuting them through the wet floor and vanquished Merrick with a fireball. The Seer got in touch with Julian and told him he needed her help with making the deal, as Dahlia would find a way to break it. He agreed and passed on her instructions to Penny, who forced Dahlia to sign the deal and vanquished her, allowing Julian to steal her necklace for the Seer.

The following day, the Seer went to Julian and he offered up the necklace. As a condition, Julian asked her to cancel all current contracts, to which she agreed. The Seer then seduced Julian, knowing that due to being possessed, he had never truly been with a woman, and the two started a sexual relationship.

Stealing from Morrigan[]

Some time later, the Seer suggested that they could steal Morrigan's Grimoire, as she required a spell from it and Julian could use it to sever the connection between Morrigan and Wyatt. After some hesitation, he accepted and the Seer gave him a potion that would make him immune to her luring. The Seer continued to flirt with him, and while Julian initially rejected her attempts, he realized he was attracted to her.

As they arrived at Morrigan's lair, they saw the entrance was guarded by her slaves. The Seer told Julian to distract them while she went to steal the book. To convince him to trust her, she told him that she was once a witch and that the first Seer had stolen and destroyed her soul. She required a spell from the Grimoire that would allow her to restore her own fractured soul at the expense of the souls she gained from Dahlia.

As he felt close to the Seer, Julian wanted to help her, but he was not sure he could allow her to sacrifice those souls. However, he decided not to think about that until after they had gotten the Grimoire. Their plan succeeded, but Morrigan quickly noticed the theft. As she could not find the Seer's lair, she instead confronted the Halliwells at P3, where Julian joined them. Morrigan demanded the return of her Grimoire, or she would unleash her demons on the mortals in the club. She also revealed the relationship between Julian and the Seer, as well as her part in defeating Dahlia.

The cousins were angry to learn about the souls Julian had offered up and Wyatt noted that the end doesn't justify the means. The Seer then appeared and offered the Morrigan her Grimoire back, after which Wyatt forced her to retreat, as their connection worked both ways. When she was gone, the Seer revealed she had copied the spell. The family then argued about the souls, which frustrated Julian as he was only trying to help save Wyatt. He decided to cast the spell on his own and left with the Seer.

At the mansion, Julian admitted that he did not want to sacrifice those souls and tried to convince the Seer she could not live with it either. She explained that the spell required an extreme amount of power and that there was no other way. Julian then offered to channel the power of the entire Warren line. He admitted his feelings for her and that he believed she felt the same. The Seer revealed her name to be Talia, and the two spent the night together.

Meeting Cole[]

Although he was sincerely falling in love with her, Julian still had some reservations about trusting Talia completely. Talia went to see him and told him that she needed his help to recover a large fragment of her soul that would act as a magnet to attract others, and that this fragment was due to his pact with the Seer, had become the property of Mephisto, one of the most powerful demons ever. Julian wasn't sure it was possible for the two of them to rob Mephisto as they had done with Morrigan, but Talia replied that she wouldn't help him if he didn't help her, and told him to call her once he decided what to do she left.

At that point Julian decided to go and ask Phoebe for advice, but it turned out to be a bad idea; it annoyed him that his half-sisters had told her about his relationship with the Seer, and when Phoebe started talking about what he felt for Talia, Julian got angry because he thought that she should not put a mouth on his feelings, and left. Soon after he called Talia and guaranteed her help.

The couple reached one of the entrances to Purgatory, the infernal dimension dominated by Mephisto. To prevent being noticed, they wore clothes belonging to the damned, and after Julian had eliminated the guardian of the entrance, they entered Purgatory.

The soul fragment was in the castle of Mephisto, and to reach it Julian and Talia had to be carried by Charon on a river of lava. During the journey Julian had the impression that someone was trying to talk to him and he glimpsed a mysterious figure. The whispers from the figure raised other doubts to Julian about Talia, and when Julian brought it up, Talia was upset, although she admitted that she was not sure what she would do if she had to choose between getting her soul back and Julian if she admitted she had feelings for him. The two could not conclude the conversation, because they were attacked by a mysterious fire-breathing creature.

Julian protected Talia from the monster, but during the escape the two separated. Julian wandered around the fortress for a while when he realized someone was following him, the same mysterious figure as before that led him into a hall full of crystals, where to his amazement it turned out to be his father Cole.

Julian asked Cole how he could be there and he replied that he was in the Cosmic Void and that he had managed to manifest in front of him thanks to the crystals. His father told him that he could understand his love for Talia, and his desire to help her, but that by putting his relationship with her first, he would risk ending up like him. Soon after, Cole began to disappear but first showed him a way to escape from Purgatory, though Julian refused to leave Talia, so Cole showed him how to reach her. Before his father disappeared Julian asked him if they would meet again; Cole replied that he hoped so and that he had always loved him.

The meeting upset Julian somewhat and when he reached Talia she realized that something had happened to him, but Julian refused to explain until they escaped. Unfortunately, at that moment Mephisto arrived and trapped Julian in the rock, declaring that he wanted to make a deal with Talia. Mephisto proposed to Talia to put herself at his service by telling her that he would restore her soul and make sure that she would keep her immortality in exchange for her services, and that he would leave Julian alone but she refused, stating that she would never bow to anyone again and freed Julian with a potion. While he kept Mephisto ay bay by throwing electric shocks at him, she recovered the fragment of her soul. Once she was done, the woman temporarily trapped the lord of Purgatory in a mirror with a spell, giving them enough time to escape. he two ran to the pier and Charon, who took them to the door of Purgatory and the two were able to escape.

After escaping, Julian and Talia returned to the Turner Mansion, and he at that point wanted to know exactly what Talia felt about him; Talia, however, replied that she did not know, since she had been soulless for centuries, and that therefore she would do everything to take it back with or without him, and then leave. A few days later Julian received an unexpected visit from Phoebe, who wanted to finish their conversation. Julian didn't feel like it, but eventually he talked to her about his concerns and when Phoebe said he had to decide what felt right to him, the boy noted that his father had told him the same. It shocked Phoebe to find out that Julian had met Cole, and he asked her if she still loved him and she answered that she still did, if only slightly, but was now a closed chapter didn't agree with him so much. He later asked her to let him think and she left.

Losing Talia[]

Angry that Julian and Talia had robbed him and then slipped out from under his nose, Mephisto placed a high bounty on their heads, so Julian spent the next two weeks battling demons eager to earn the reward. Despite this, Julian's focus was always Talia. He didn't agree with what she wanted to do, but he loved her and couldn't bear the thought of losing her. After getting rid of a bounty hunter, he was joined by Prue and Penny who wanted to free Wyatt's soul and wanted to get Talia's help. Julian didn't trust them, but he decided to give it a try and got Prue to give him a mirror, he told Talia that he was ready to talk and she used her powers to bring them into her lair. Unfortunately, Talia shared her distrust of his sisters who in turn seemed interested only in helping Wyatt and not Talia. Penny pushed the boundaries when she threatened to hypnotize her, so Talia banished the two sisters out of her home and put Julian to sleep with a spell.

When Julian woke up, he found himself chained to Talia's bed. He tried in vain to make Talia change her mind one last time, letting her know that he loved her, but that he could not support her decision to sacrifice her souls. Talia left him chained, hoping he would change his mind after she claimed her soul. However, Julian managed to escape after receiving support from his sisters through a spell and joined her where she had already begun the ritual by interrupting it. Having lost her source of energy, her spell began to feed on Talia's power causing pain so excruciating that it led her to beg Julian to kill her.

When Julian asked her why she didn't trust him, she admitted that she couldn't, because she had only known betrayal in her life, so Julian stabbed her in the abdomen. After one last kiss, Talia shared with him a premonition in which she showed him where the spell to free her cousin's soul from Morrigan was before dying. Having to kill the first person he ever loved was devastating to Julian. Reaching his relatives, he managed to free Wyatt and together the two vanquished Morrigan, but Prue was killed in the fight.

After the fight, Julian sent the souls he had stolen for Talia to the afterlife. He also tried to figure out what had happened to her soul of, but found no trace of it and deduced that it had been destroyed by the ritual, and that nothing was left of Talia, which pained him even more. Having to find a way to get rid of Mephisto he decided to leave the city in order to be more difficult to trace, after informing Penny and Noah.

Searching For Inner Peace[]

After traveling a few months, Julian ended up in Bangkok. When he went to a bar one night, a friendly woman invited him to a party and, despite not being over Talia, he decided to go. Once they arrived, Julian blacked out and when he woke up, he found himself covered in blood surrounded by the corpses of the other guests with no memory of what happened but was convinced he was the one who committed the massacre. Some time later, he was attacked by a group of Zotar and was aided by a Zen disciple named Sheng Li, who realized that Julian was seeking inner peace and offered to take him to his monastery. Julian agreed and his new friend convinced his master to let the demon-witch stay with them.

Some time later the Zen Master had a face-to-face meeting with Julian about him and told him that he had to face his inner demons. At that moment, the monastery was attacked by Rhys and Shula, two Dragon Warlocks that the young Turner managed to drive out. Later the master gave him and Sheng Li the task of recovering and protecting the other target of the warlocks, the Dragon Blade that was in San Francisco. When the two arrived they discovered that the Dragon-Warlocks had preceded them and the police were in the house of the guardians of the blade. The blade was gone, but Julian deduced that one of the keepers had managed to escape with it. Shortly after they were surprised by an inspector, but Sheng Li knocked him out, so Julian could teleport them away.

Julian suggested that Sheng Li try to perceive the guardian of the blade and he succeeded, but with difficulty so Julian realized that his relatives must have come across the guardian and that they were hiding him. Although he didn't really want to see them, he took Sheng Li to his half-sisters' home. There Julian found out that Noah was assigned as his Whitelighter and met the blade guardian Mei Ling. The group decided to use the blade against their enemies, but Payton didn't want to because she had seen Julian stabbed with it in a premonition and stormed away. Penny was forced out because she was summoned by the police, so it was Julian's turn to try to calm Payton down, which in the end he succeeded. Using Penny as bait, the group managed to lure the Dragon-Warlocks to them, resulting in a fight that vanquished Shula, however Rhys soon overpowered them all. When he tried to stab Payton with the blade, Julian appeared in between them and was stabbed as a result, the blade absorbing his human soul.

The blade hadn't had time to absorb Julian's demonic side as well, so he didn't die. Whilst unconscious, Julian's demonic side transformed him into a demon, and in this form vanquished Rhys. He then began to attack his sisters before Mei Ling and Payton stabbed him with the blade, restoring Julian's soul and reversing the transformation, falling unconscious once again. Upon awakening, Julian was informed of what had happened and he eventually opened up about what happened in Bangkok and agreed to return to San Francisco. When he returned home, Julian discovered that in his absence, someone else had taken to live there, a woman named Ivy who told him she was Elizabeth's daughter and true heir before banishing him from the mansion.

Over the next few days, Julian wandered through the city, haunted by what had happened in Thailand and by the memory of Talia. He couldn't forget her and dreamed of her every night, missing her more and more. One day while he was in a bar, a demon attacked the bartender because she was unable to pay him back the money he had lent her to open the place. Julian protected her as best he could and shortly after the demon called for reinforcements. At that point, however, Penny, Wyatt and Henry Mitchell Jr. arrived and the demon seemed to recognize and feel attracted to the first one that he called "Phillipa". Shortly afterwards the demons retreated and Julian deduced that their leader must have had something to do with his half-sister's past life, later allowing himself to be persuaded to stay at the manor overnight. The next morning he and Henry went to a demonic market looking for clues and ran into Ivy who Henry also knew.

Ivy revealed to the two cousins that she had sold the demon leader a ring that could transform Penny back into Phillipa, or destroy her soul and then escape. Returning home, the two informed Penny and Wyatt of what had happened and eventually joined them and Lincoln Reed (an agent of MIND, a government organization that dealt with magic) in an attack on the Cicada nest. Penny eventually agreed to wear the ring, but Phillipa refused to return with her demonic lover and burned him and his henchmen.

After dealing with it a bit, Henry realized that Julian wasn't a bad person and offered to help him with his demonic side using the Soulthorn Ring and Julian for his part asked him to try to get closer to Ivy.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Julian is the first male to be born in the Warren line. It was previously believed that his cousin Wyatt was the first, though Julian was born in secret a day earlier.
  • Although this makes Julian the eldest cousin, the head of the family is still Wyatt.
  • Like many Warren witches, Julian has lost one of his parents.
  • Julian shares similarities with Paige; they both didn't grow up with the Halliwell family and use a different surname, they both have three half-sisters one of which died, with whom they share their mother, and both were the first of something in the Warren line (the first male and the first hybrid).
  • Julian was initially believed to be the only Demon-Witch in existence, though it was later revealed there is at least one other. The two are also related.
  • However, Julian is the first known Demon-Witch. Curiously, his half-sister, Prue, was the first known Cupid-Witch.
  • Julian is also the first known member of the Warren line to have no past lives, as it's impossible for half-demons.
  • Julian is one of the three members of the Warren line to have shown powers from the womb: the other two are Phoebe and Wyatt.
  • Julian shares more similarities with Phoebe: both grew up without their parents and met one in spirit form, both were raised by their respective grandmothers and both had to kill the person they loved.
  • Presumably in alternate futures where Wyatt had gone evil, the Halliwell family did not know of Julian's existence: the Chris from one of those timelines never mentioned it, and the Wyatt from another claimed to be himself, the elder cousin.
  • Julian is Phoebe's only child who does not have a name starting with "P", this is because his grandmother chose his name. He is also the only son of Phoebe who does not particularly resemble her physically, and has not inherited any of the active powers she possessed.
  • This made Julian the first member of the Warren line to have no "P" as an initial in one hundred and eight years.
  • Curiously Julian has one power in common with Phoebe's past life, P. Russell, and another with his father, grandmother and numerous Warren witches.
  • Julian had to kill the woman he was in love with; ironically his father and grandfather were killed by the women they loved.
  • It is revealed in "Divine Witchervention" that Julian has earned the right to a Whitelighter, despite his demonic blood, after he freed the souls captured by Talia and helped vanquish Morrigan.
  • This makes Julian the first known individual with demonic blood to have a Whitelighter.
  • Julian is the only cousin to not channel the The Power of Three.
  • "Dragon Tale" reveals that when deprived of his soul, Julian assumed a demonic form similar to that of his father Belthazor. This is quite strange considering that when Cole was possessed by the Source and conceived Julian he had become a mortal. It is possible that some traces of Belthazor remained inside him who helped to compose the demonic side of his son.
  • Coincidentally when she faked her death and assumed another identity, Phoebe used the female version of her son's name, as she renamed herself "Julie Bennett". However this was a mere coincidence, as Phoebe had no idea of Julian's existence at the time.
  • Considering that he was born by Elizabeth, Julian can be considered both son and brother of Cole. Technically this also makes his half-aunt Ivy his sister.
  • Julian's childhood was similar to that of Christy Jenkins: both were bred to be used as weapons against good and had no human contact. Unlike Christy, however, Julian has not gone mad and has not lost his sense of good and evil, perhaps because being a half-demon he was genetically predisposed to such treatment. Coincidentally Julian and Christy have some active powers in common.
  • All of Julian's powers concern either the mind or an element.
  • Julian is the only pyrokinetic in the Warren line who has never voluntarily sided with evil. However his mother Phoebe was as she tapped into his powers over fire.
  • Julian is also very similar to Macy Vaughn from the Charmed reboot: both are the oldest in their families, both didn't grow up with them and use another surname, both are demon-witches, both have been possessed by the Source, both have had to letting the person they were in love with die, and they both had problems with their demonic side, plus they are both telekinetic and pyrokinetic. However, some of these similarities are coincidental, as the Legacy series began long before the reboot. Coincidentally, Talia has some similarities with Galvin Burdette, Macy's boyfriend.
  • Julian's name may be a tribute to Julian McMahon the actor who played Cole in the series.
  • Julian is the only known offspring of an Eternal, although The Source used the body of another to father him. It is unknown whether he inherited the characteristics typical of the Eternals.
  • Curiously, Talia managed to share a premonition with Julian although he is not a seer and there was no magical connection between the two. It may have been possible because he is a telepath.
  • Considering that Gideon never tried to kill Julian as he did with Wyatt, despite being equally powerful and potentially more dangerous as a half-demon, it is presumable that the Elders discovered that Julian was still alive only after Gideon's death.
  • Julian is the only child of a Charmed One to have never used the power of three himself.
