Legacy 207: The Perks of Being a Warlock

Portrayed by

.
"You should have killed me when you had the chance."
—Grace to her family after becoming a warlock.[src]

Grace Helen Mitchell is the second-born daughter of Paige Matthews and Henry Mitchell, born in 2010. She is the younger twin of Laura and the older sister of Henry Mitchell Jr. She is named after one of her Warren ancestors and her maternal (adoptive) grandmother, Helen Matthews.

Born as a Whitelighter-Witch, Grace became a warlock by killing another witch after falling in love with Luke and unknowingly drinking a potion that made her more susceptible to evil.

History[]

Early Life[]

503px-Henry and the Twins

Grace with her mother and siblings

As noted by Wyatt, the eight-year-old twins had long dark blonde hair and green eyes. Laura had her hair in a ponytail while Grace had it loose, which was the only way to keep them apart sometimes, as they were nearly-identical. According to Paige, Grace was always the emotional one.

As the twins grew up, they were inseparable despite being different as night and day. Grace is known as the the more fun-loving and outgoing of the pair, focusing more on boys than on school. She also loves fashion and wears more stylish and revealing clothes than her sister.

While they were in high school, Grace convinced Laura to stop practicing the hobby of painting, because she considered it not beautiful and useless.

Legacy[]

At the age of nineteen and fresh out of high school, the twins applied to a college in Paris together without telling their parents. Grace wanted to study art while Laura wanted to study cultural history. When they finally told their parents, they were furious and this anger was later enhanced by the Spirit of Rage, Darius. while initially sticking together, the sisters later turned on each other as well and even used their elemental powers at each other. However, when the cause was revealed, they reconciled.

The twins then explained to their parents that they were old and mature enough to make this decision on their own. Their parents later agreed and allowed the twins to move to Paris while moving to LA themselves because of Henry's new job.

Paris[]

After a few months in Paris, Grace had begun sleeping with a guy named Luke, whom she slowly started developing feelings for, something that was quite new for her. However, she soon found out that either Luke or Laura's boyfriend Oliver was a warlock. The twins agreed that they needed to identify and vanquish the warlock.

The twins and Melinda came up with a plan to vanquish the warlocks at a rave. While out getting potion ingredients, Grace was confronted by Luke and she scratched him, exposing him as a warlock when he did not bleed. Luke admitted to being a warlock, but told her his feelings for her were real. He revealed that Oliver was a warlock as well and that they were both working for Bastion. Grace felt conflicted, though she was eventually forced to tell the truth to her sister and Melinda.

At the rave, Grace felt overwhelmed with everything and decided to let loose a little. As she was dancing, Luke came up to her and they kissed. After he blinked them away, Grace told him that she could not trust him. In order to give herself more time to think, she decided to fake his death. Grace later helped save Ryan by cauterizing his wound and led the others to Bastion. He wanted to reveal the truth about Luke, though she quickly vanquished him with the others. Grace felt guilty about her actions, though she got a text from Luke telling her that he loved her.

Secret Rendevous[]

Shortly after faking his death, Grace met with Luke in a hotel in Paris. When she woke up alone, she became worried and almost called her sister to confess her secret, though Luke arrived with breakfast. When Grace wished that they could stop hiding, Luke suggested she could become a warlock, though Grace replied that she would never want that. When Luke noted that warlocks were hated by everyone, Grace replied that some day, they might change that.

Heart of Darkness[]

Grace continued to meet with Luke in secret, and he took the opportunity to secretly administer the Heart of Darkness, a tonic that would weaken the good inside her making her more susceptible to evil, and began to tempt her. Luke continued to prey on Grace's desire for freedom and lowered her inhibitions with the potion. His actions later led Grace to turn on and even attack her family, at which point Luke teleported her away. They retreated to a hotel, where they were attacked by Aubrey Collins, a witch who wanted revenge for the deaths of her sister and her Whitelighter, both killed by Luke.

When Aubrey realized that the two were in love, she tried to kill Grace to make Luke suffer; they managed to escape to a clothes shop, where they were joined again by Aubrey, as well as by Wyatt and Noah, Aubrey's new Whitelighters. Shortly after came Grace's family, who tried in vain to make her think about her situation. Aubrey knocked everyone back with a wave of telekinetic energy, and she tried to kill Luke, but Grace intervened and stabbed Aubrey with an athame, killing her and absorbing her powers and becoming a warlock.

Grace looked pleased with her transformation, and wanted to start a life with Luke; however, Luke was frozen by Laura and destroyed when Grace touched him. Angered by his death, Grace attempted to kill Laura but was stopped by Wyatt. However, nobody had the strength to face her so she teleported away.

Alliance with Morrigan[]

After Luke's death, Grace began touring the world partying and having casual sex with guys who reminded her of Luke. One evening in Rio, Grace was joined by Dominik, a demon in Morrigan's service, who proposed an alliance with Morrigan, which would allow her to avenge Luke. Grace grudgingly agreed, not wanting to antagonize a powerful demon like Morrigan, although she really wanted to take revenge on Laura.

Grace's family, however, had sensed that Morrigan would probably try to ruin Melinda's marriage, and it was Laura who was in charge of putting security measures in the church where the marriage would take place. Grace joined her and made fun of her after threatening her and then teleporting away. Grace later broke into the church in the middle of the ceremony and Laura challenged her to a duel, so the twins went to fight in a cemetery near the church, where they were joined by their parents.

Their father, however, had become Morrigan's slave and prevented Paige from intervening. Using Henry, Morrigan revealed the truth about the Heart of Darkness to the Mitchells. Laura, however, realized that Grace had decided on her own to spare Luke and continue dating him and that she was still responsible for her actions, so the fight between the twins continued. Eventually Grace got the better of her and would have killed Laura had it not been for Junior's arrival and intervention. The latter could have killed Grace, but under the illusion of still being able to save her, Paige and Laura convinced him to let her go. Grace teleported away after telling her family that they had already wasted two chances to kill her, and that they wouldn't have a third.

Moving On[]

Grace continued travelling the world and living a carefree life, though she was troubled by a sense of loneliness. Realizing that the life of a warlock was harsh and cruel, she did her best to distract herself from dealing with those feelings. In Seattle, she accidentally ran into a man being chased by a demon and reluctantly got involved. As the demon overpowered her, she was saved by a witch named Izzy, who revealed she was looking for a warlock to learn more about her own warlock side. Grace brushed her off, stating that she didn't know anything about being a warlock. After a second demon attack, they learned a demon named Wulfric was involved, but Grace decided not to get involved any further and let Izzy go after him alone. That evening while having dinner in a restaurant, Grace was approached by another warlock, Asher who on Wulfric's orders was looking for whoever had saved the innocent and had come to Grace and asked for her help thinking that they both wanted a purpose, but she refused to help him.

However, Asher's words pushed Grace to want to better understand what it meant to be a warlock and thinking that she could find answers in Wulfric's club, she forced a demon named Krimm to help her enter, offering to give him more powers in exchange. Krimm accepted the deal and the two infiltrated the club, but after they split up, Grace saw that Izzy had also entered and to prevent him from blowing her cover she went to talk to her.

Shortly afterwards Asher also joined them and decided to betray Wulfric by revealing that he wanted to find the Blackwell family vault, in order to take possession of the knowledge stored there and the three decided to collaborate, so Grace cast a spell to unleash chaos in the club and taking advantage of the diversion, they infiltrated the power broker's office and took over the location of the vault, escaping thanks to Krimm after a brief fight with Wulfric and his lover, Lena.

Eventually Grace, Izzy and Asher prevailed and entered the vault where they met the echo of Delphine Blackwell, who revealed to them the origin of the witches and warlocks. Asher became enraged when he realized that there was no real power to be found in the vault, as being a member of the Rowe family the most powerful lineage of warlocks, he wanted to restore their honor and begged Grace to join him in devising a version warlock of the Charmed Ones, as his father and uncles should have become. Izzy begged her not to do it and an angry Asher tried to kill her, however Grace ultimately decided not to side with him and by working together the two women managed to kill him.

Despite what she discovered, Grace didn't feel any better, and even though Izzy considered her a friend, she said she couldn't be close to her or her darkness would infect her, and left. A few days later while she was in a demonic bar, Grace was approached by Krimm who, to repay the help she had given him, gave her the power of the apportation she had told him she wanted. Shortly thereafter she helped a warlock named Mae get rid of three demons who were hunting her and proposed that she join a coven she wanted to form: the Sisterhood of Warlocks, an offer that Mae accepted.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • Despite being a Whitelighter-Witch, Grace did not inherit enough Whitelighter genes to get Whitelighter powers, though she didn't seem to mind. She later becomes a warlock.
  • Though she is not the first Warren witch to turn evil, Grace is the first to become a warlock, making her the only one who permanently switched sides.
    • Grace is the second Warren witch to become evil, seduced by a warlock, the first being P. Russell. Presumably Russell would have become a warlock too, if her cousins hadn't killed her before she killed them.
    • Grace is also the first Warren witch to undergo a permanent magical transformation. The second was Prue who became a cupid.
    • Both Grace's and Prue's transformation were caused by Morrigan. However, the only one she had planned was Grace's.
  • Grace is one of five characters to have her name in the title of a story. The other four are Billie, Duncan, Penny and Noah.
  • There is a fifty percent chance that her past life is Nimue.
  • Ironically, the first power Grace stole was telekinesis, the most common power within the Warren Line.
  • To push Grace into evil, Luke preyed on her desire to be free from the constraints of being a witch. It is worth noting that her mother Paige had similar desires, which were exploited by Vincent Wrong for the same reasons.
  • Grace's transformation into a warlock contributed to the ultimate end of the power of the three. If that hadn't happened, there would have been enough cousins to summon that power even after Prue's death. However, it may return in future generations of Warren.
  • Even though she discovered that Luke used the Heart of Darkness on her and feels manipulated by him, Grace continues to love and miss him.
  • If Grace had descendants, they could become an evil version of the Charmed Ones, like the Rowe brothers were supposed to become.
  • Grace caused the extinction of two powerful magical bloodlines, the Collins family and the Rowe family.
  • It is important to note that Grace could have resisted the influence of the Heart of Darkness, just as her aunt Phoebe eventually defeated the influence of the tonic the Source gave her. Ultimately, even though she was manipulated and influenced, she was the one who chose to become evil, as noted by Morrigan and understood by Laura.
  • Grace and her siblings are the first second-generation hybrids to appear in the series.
